Finishing runners-up last season, SPF Private Clients Mens Volleyball team are back in the local league this year, and have started strongly!

Here is our match report from the first game of the season:

League: Mens
Date: 4 January 2020
SPF Team: SPF Private Clients Men
Opponent: Plough Inn Men
Score: SPF win in 3 (Best of 3 sets)

The first match of the men’s league saw defending champions Plough Inn taking on last season’s second place finishers SPF Private Clients. Plough Inn took a lead in the first set with setter Gavin Fitch finding hitters Ashley Gordon and Armins Tomins early on. SPF pulled level thanks to a strong serving run from Matt Ashworth. Ultimately Plough Inn would seal the set with Fitch connecting with the impressive Tomins for the final three points.

The second set was a tighter affair where Plough Inn again took the lead early. SPF caught up thanks to efficient hitting from experienced island player Ryan Martel. Both teams found their block in the second set with Tomins and Martel finding themselves on the receiving end of kill blocks. Thanks to consistent passing and coverage from Stephen Adam and Joe Baines, SPF were able to run their offense more affectively and take the set.

SPF took control in the final set thanks to strong serving from captain and setter Nick Gaudion. A highly experienced player, Gaudion distributed the ball well throughout the match. As the end drew nearer Gaudion found Martel for the final two points to close out the match and complete the upset.
