With the evenings drawing in, and the temperatures slowly dropping, it is clear to see that winter is on it’s way!

Don’t let your property become a victim to the elements. As insurance providers, we know the main culprits of insurance claims, and have compiled a list of things for you to check, to keep your home safe this season:

Clean gutters

If you can’t get on a ladder yourself, hire someone. Wait until all the leaves are down, then do it once, (unless, of course, they’re already overflowing when it rains). This will ensure correct function/drainage of the guttering, and reduce the risk of build up, which could in turn, lead to leaks and damage to the guttering.

Pipes

Check all pipework, and be certain that it is well insulated, not forgetting any outside plumbing/taps.

Seal up masonry

Repair any broken joints or cracks in walkways, steps and stonework. Make sure you have clear, shovel-friendly paths to all doors. (You never know, it may snow!)

Hire a chimney sweep

If you haven’t had your chimneys cleaned in a while, it’s probably time. If you light your fire around three times a week, you should clean it every year. Even if they look fine, there may be internal water damage to the bricks, that you can’t see.

Trees/Shrubs

Ensure that all trees and shrubs are well tended to, in order to prevent branches and debris from damaging your roofing and surrounding areas, in the event of strong winds.

Roofing

Check your roofing. (Hiring a professional roofer for this is recommended). Make sure that you check for loose slates on your properties roof, and be sure that all outbuildings are safe and secure, from the elements.
